Inherited from Old East Slavic березовꙑи (berezovyi), from Proto-Slavic *berzovъ. By surface analysis, берёз- (berjóz-, birch) +‎ -овый (-ovyj). Cognate with Belarusian бяро́завы (bjarózavy), Ukrainian бере́зовий (berézovyj), Polish brzozowy, Czech březový, Slovak brezový, etc.
