First attested in 1859. бе́лый (bélyj, white) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ кровь (krovʹ, blood) +‎ -ие (-ije), calque of New Latin leucaemia, from Ancient Greek λευκός (leukós, white) + αἷμα (haîma, blood).
