Inherited from Old East Slavic бѣличии (běličii), from бѣлица (bělica, squirrel), diminutive of бѣла (běla, squirrel). By surface analysis, recognized as an irregular form of бе́лка (bélka, squirrel) +‎ -ий (-ij) (the expected form would be *белочий).
