From Proto-Turkic *bāyu-, equivalent to бай (bay, rich) +‎ -ы- (-ï-, denominal verbal suffix) +‎ -ыр (-ïr, infinitive suffix).

Cognate with Kyrgyz баюу (bayuu), Kazakh баю (baü), Bashkir байыу (bayıw, to become rich), Kumyk байымакъ (bayımaq), Uzbek boyimoq, Uyghur بېيىماق (bëyimaq), Tuvan байыыр (bayıır), Khakas пайирға (payirğa), etc.
