[edit]Etymology
[edit]Of unclear origin. The Russian cognate ахине́я (axinéja) is thought to derive either from dialectal Russian охи́нить (oxínitʹ, “to scold”) (related to хинь (xinʹ, “nonsense”) and хи́нить (xínitʹ, “to abuse”)) or from a seminarian usage of the word афинейский (afinejskij) in the sense of 'falsely learned', from Ancient Greek Ἀθηναῖος (Athēnaîos, “Athenian”).[1][2][3]
