Etymology

Perhaps from а́хать (áxatʹ) +‎ -нуть (-nutʹ) or ах (ax) +‎ -нуть (-nutʹ); since the 18th century. Compare Polish achnąć.

1. to exclaim, to gasp, to sigh

   он так и а́хнул ― on tak i áxnul ― he simply opened his mouth

   а́хнуть от удивле́ния ― áxnutʹ ot udivlénija ― gasp with surprise

   он и а́хнуть не успе́л ― on i áxnutʹ ne uspél ― ≈ before he knew where he was; before he could say knife
