Moksha

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Negative particle incorporating the intensifier particle -ак (-ak). It may be possible to link the element ап- (ap-) with Finnish epä-, Estonian eba- (deceptive; such that is not the way it is supposed to be), compare Udmurt ӧв-, ӧвӧл (öv-, övöl, not, no), Komi-Zyrian абу (abu, no, not, not present). Moksha апалямс (apaľams, to ruin; to maim, cripple), апаляфкс (apaľafks, stain) can be considered of the same origin. Eastern Mari овлаш, овылаш (ovlaš, ovylaš, to hex, spoil using magic) could be related.[1]
