Etymology
[edit]From *alqïš (“praise, blessing”), derived from Proto-Turkic *ạlkɨ- (“to praise, bless”).[1]
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (alqïš, “praise, blessing”);[2] Kumyk алгъыш (alğış, “blessing; expression of gratitude”), Kyrgyz алкыш (alkış, “blessing”), Southern Altai алкыш (alkïš, “blessing”), Uzbek olqish (“an act of wishing well, blessing, benediction; applause”), Uyghur ئالقىش (alqish, “applause; praise; benediction”), Turkish alkış (“applause”), Tuvan алгыш (algış, “blessing”), etc.
