абаша

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Russian

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

Related to бакша (bakša, elder amongst Kalmyk priests), from Kalmyk бакшы (bakşy, shaman). From Old Chinese 博士 (*paːɡ zrɯʔ, teacher, mentor) > Mandarin 博士 (bóshì, doctor, academician). The suffix -ша (-ša) is apparently from (shì, scholar), or  / (shī, tutor). Compare тайша (tajša, Kalmyk leader, elder).

The origin of аба- (aba-) is unclear.
