Etymology

[edit]

Likely borrowed from East Slavic; compare Belarusian Акі́м (Akím), Russian Яки́м (Jakím), Аки́м (Akím) and Ukrainian Юхи́м (Juxým). However, compare also Czech Jáchym, which could suggest that this spelling variant may have been inherited from some Old Slovak *Jákym. Ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἰωακείμ (Iōakeím), Ἰωακίμ (Iōakím), from Biblical Hebrew יְהוֹיָקִים (yəhôyâqîm, literally may Yahweh raise up).

Alternative form borrowed from Serbo-Croatian Јоаким / Joakim, from Latin Iōāchīmus, from the same Ancient Greek source as above.
