[edit]Literally, “mosquito (river)”. From Finnic languages, such as Livvi siäksi, Karelian šiäkši, Veps säsk, cf. Ludian siäsk, Ingrian sääski, ultimately from Proto-Finnic *säski (“mosquito”). First attested in c. 1200‒1220.
