Etymology

Literally, mosquito (river). From Finnic languages, such as Livvi siäksi, Karelian šiäkši, Veps säsk, cf. Ludian siäsk, Ingrian sääski, ultimately from Proto-Finnic *säski (mosquito). First attested in c. 1200‒1220.
