From Свердло́в (Sverdlóv) +‎ -ск (-sk), from the surname of Yakov Sverdlov, full name Я́ков Миха́йлович Свердло́в (Jákov Mixájlovič Sverdlóv), a Bolshevik party administrator and chairman.
