Etymology

Ellipsis of Рожьство Христово (Rožĭstvo Xristovo). First attested in c. 1050‒1075. Inherited from Proto-Slavic *roďьstvo. By surface analysis, родити (roditi, to give birth) +‎ -ьство (-ĭstvo). Cognate with Old East Slavic Рожьство (Rožĭstvo), Old Ruthenian Рожество (Rožestvo), Old Church Slavonic рождьство (roždĭstvo).
