[edit]From Москва́ (Moskvá) + -абад (-abad), the suffix likely from Persian آباد, an ending commonly found in Central Asian place names, for example Ашхабад (Ašxabad, “Ashgabat”), Исламабад (Islamabad, “Islamabad”), etc.
