[edit]Probably from Czech Ludmila. Popularized by Russian writers of the early 19th century. May be analyzed as люд (ljud) or лю́ди (ljúdi) + мила́ (milá), short feminine form of ми́лый (mílyj), i.e. dear to the people, beloved by the people.
