From Катерина f inan sg (Kateryna, Catherine) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ -слав sg (-slav), literally glory of the Catherine, referring to Catherine the Great or her saint patron Catherine of Alexandria. Cf. Russian Екатеринослав (Jekaterinoslav).
