Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic Дънѣпръ (Dŭněprŭ), from Proto-Slavic *Dъněprъ, from Proto-Sarmatian *dān *apara "the far river" or *Dānapr (“the deep river”), the first element being from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰánwati << *dʰénh₂- ~ dʰn̥h₂-u- << Proto-Indo-European *dʰenh₂- (“to flow”).
Compare with Днестр (Dnestr), whose name probably means "the close river."
