[edit]First attested in c. 1075‒1100. From Old East Slavic-Varangian given name *Gъdlěbъ, borrowed from Old Norse Guðleifr (literally “God's heir”) from guð (“God”) + leifr (“inheritor”). Compare Old Swedish Guðlēfr, Old Saxon Godolēf, Godlēf, Old English Gūðlāf, German Gottlieb. Cognate with Old East Slavic Гълѣбъ (Gŭlěbŭ), Old Ruthenian Глѣбъ (Hlěb), Russian Глеб (Gleb).
