Греччина

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Ukrainian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From грецький (hrecʹkyj, Greek) +‎ -ина (-yna) with "-цьк" changing to "-чч" due to alternation, from Proto-Slavic *grьkъ (Greek).

Compare with Ukrainian Словаччина (Slovaččyna, Slovakia) from словацький (slovacʹkyj, Slovak) +‎ -ина (-yna), or Ukrainian Німеччина (Nimeččyna, Germany) from німецький (nimecʹkyj, German) +‎ -ина (-yna). The same word-building model is used in Belarusian Ангельшчына (Anhjelʹščyna, England).
