Inherited from Proto-Slavic *vojevodina, equivalent to во̀јвода +‎ -ов +‎ -ина and thus meaning "the land of the Voivode", with Voivode (во̀јвода) being equivalent to the English title duke or more literally warlord. See Хѐрцеговина for a parallel development.
