Etymology

[edit]

From волоський (volosʹkyj, Vlach, Wallachian) +‎ -ина (-yna) with "-ськ" changing to "-щ" (-шч) (< -сч < -сьч) due to alternation. Compare Polish Wołoszczyzna.

Compare with Ukrainian Словаччина (Slovaččyna, Slovakia) from словацький (slovacʹkyj, Slovak) +‎ -ина (-yna), or Ukrainian Туреччина (Tureččyna, Turkey) from турецький (turecʹkyj, Turkish) +‎ -ина (-yna). The same word-building model is used in Belarusian Ангельшчына (Anhjelʹščyna, England).
