[edit]Unknown. However, there are two highly questionable etymologies:
- From the Ukrainian verb відтина́ти (vidtynáty, “to cut off”).
- One of the forms Федо́т (Fedót) or Ведене́й (Vedenéj), with a suffix forming diminutive masculine nouns -ут- (-ut-).
