[edit]From Ottoman Turkish بورغاز (Burğaz), probably a transliteration of an earlier Πύργος (Pýrgos, “watchtower”) as per accounts by Byzantine author Manuel Philes. Ultimately of paleo-Balkan or paleo-Anatolian origin. Compare dialectal Bulgarian пирг (pirg, “pillar”).
