[edit]From баба (baba, “grandmother, old woman”) + Russian Яга́ (Jagá). Second element preserved in dialects as native енза́ (enzá, “ulcer, infection”) (with progressive palatalization of *-g- after *ę). Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *baba ęga.
