Etymology

[edit]

According to Vycichl, most likely a Semitic borrowing akin to Aramaic חָנוּתָא (ḥānūṯā). He rejects the hypothesis of a derivation from Demotic ḥt-ntr, from Egyptian ḥwt-nṯrt (temple, literally god's mansion) (as found in Černý) on phonetic grounds, as no variants rhyme with ⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ (noute).
