Etymology

[edit]

Closest to ψόλος (psólos, soot). Furnée connects ψοῖθος (psoîthos, ashes) and assumes also *ψῶδος (*psôdos, dirt), on the basis of ψωδαρέον (psōdaréon, dry, parched; squalid, wretched), suggesting a Pre-Greek origin.
