[edit]From Proto-Iranian *hwa- (“self-”),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swa- (“self-”), from Proto-Indo-European *swe- (“self-”), from Proto-Indo-European *swé (“self (reflexive pronoun)”). Compare Avestan 𐬓𐬀 (xᵛa, “self, oneself”), Old Persian 𐎢𐎺 (u-v /ʰuva/). Cognate of Sanskrit स्व (sva, “his/her own, of self”).
