[edit]Etymology
[edit]According to Beekes, the word could be Pre-Greek, in view of the variant and the meaning. Several unconvincing attempts have been made by Pokorny, who compares the word with Sanskrit दोधति (dodhati, “fierce, impetuous, turbulent”) and by Schindler, who assumes an original color term, like in the plant name τεύθριον (teúthrion).
