Probably onomatopoeic. Similar bird names are Lithuanian tetervà (grey hen), Proto-Slavic *tetervь (black grouse), Proto-Iranian *tatr̥wáh (pheasant) and Sanskrit तित्तिर (tittira, partridge). From the same onomatopoeic root are τετράων (tetráōn), τέτραξ (tétrax), τατύρας (tatúras), τέταρος (tétaros) and τετράζω (tetrázō).
