[edit]Perhaps from some extension of Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand”). Compare στῡ́ω (stū́ō, “to make stiff”). See also Albanian shtyllë and Lithuanian stulpas (“pillar”), the Russian столб (stolb) and the Bulgarian стълб (stǎlb).
