Substantivisation of the masculine plural of the assumed adjective *στοιχειωμᾰτῐκός (*stoikheiōmătĭkós), from στοιχεώμᾰτᾰ (stoikheṓmătă, the signs of the Zodiac) +‎ -ῐκός (-ĭkós).
