[edit]Formation like γλωχίς (glōkhís), ἑρμίς (hermís), ῥηγμίς (rhēgmís) and ὠδίς (ōdís). Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand”), the same root of ἵστημι (hístēmi, “to stand”) and στάμνος (stámnos, “jar”)
