Etymology

Usually connected to the root Proto-Indo-European *speḱ- (“to look”), whence also σκέπτομαι (sképtomai).

Beekes claims that this is Pre-Greek based on an assumption that it could be related to the Macedonian dialectal γώψ (gṓps, “jackdaw”).
