Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Only attested in Hesychius. The alternative form σκοῦβα probably shows that this word also existed in another (non-Attic) dialect where the shift /u/ > /y/ did not take place, with <ου> used to represent the old /u/ sound. (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
