[edit]From σκάλλω (skállō, “to stir up, to hoe”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (“to split, separate”); see also Sanskrit कल (kalá, “small part”)), Hittite [script needed] (iškalla, “to tear apart, slit open”), Lithuanian skélti (“to split”).
