σανίς
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]The formation is common to other technical terms like δοκίς (dokís, “beam”), ἀρίς (arís, “bow-drill”) and σελίς (selís, “crossbeam”) but the origin is uncertain. According to Beekes, the connection with σαίνω (saínō, “to fawn”) should be rejected for semantic reasons.
