πτέλας

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

A possible cognate would be πτελέα (pteléa, elm), but this leaves much unexplained. The connection with Lithuanian kiaũlė (pig, swine) and Sanskrit किरि (kiri, boar, hog) should also be rejected. The connection with πελιτνός (pelitnós) and πελιός (peliós) is arbitrary. The word may well be Pre-Greek, in view of the initial "πτ-".
