παραλέχομαι
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]παρα- (para-) + λέχομαι (lékhomai)
Pronunciation
[edit]- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /pa.ra.lé.kʰo.mai̯/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /pa.raˈle.kʰo.mɛ/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /pa.raˈle.xo.mɛ/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /pa.raˈle.xo.me/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /pa.raˈle.xo.me/
Verb
[edit]πᾰρᾰλέχομαι • (părălékhomai)
- (Epic, euphemistic) to lie with, sleep with (have sex with)
Usage notes
[edit]This verb is attested only in the aorist, but is generally given a present-tense lemma in dictionaries. However, the dictionaries disagree on what that lemma should be: Cunliffe and Middle Liddell give it as παραλέγω (paralégō) (a verb which is attested with completely different meanings); Autenrieth and Bailly give it as παραλέγομαι (paralégomai). However, the semantics make derivation from λέχομαι (lékhomai), as in LSJ, the most plausible.
