Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Possibly connected to πάλλω (pállō, to swing), though this verb itself has no certain etymology. One would have to posit a Proto-Hellenic root *pal- with the suffix -άσσω, also found in σταλάσσω (stalássō), αἱμάσσω (haimássō).
