πέμπελος
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Galen's explanation is a folk etymology based on the similarity with πέμπω (pémpō, “to send, dispatch”). Blanc proposed a reduplication πελ-πελ- from Proto-Indo-European *pel- (“gray”), the same root of πελιός (peliós, “livid”) and πελιδνός (pelidnós, “pallid”). Anothery theory by Furnée links this adjective to Georgian პეპერა (ṗeṗera, “ancestor, forefather”), showing nasalization.
