[edit]According to Beekes, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (“to twist, to twine”). Compare Ancient Greek ἰτέα (itéa, “willow”), Latin vītis (“vine”) and Proto-Germanic *wiþiz (“withe”).
