[edit]From Proto-Iranian *wadʰúHh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wadʰúHs, from Proto-Indo-European *wedʰ-úHs, from Proto-Indo-European *wedʰ- (“to bind, pledge, lead”). Cognate of Sanskrit वधू (vadhū, “bride, new wife, wife”) and, more distantly, Old English weddian (“pledge, wed”).
