[edit]Onomatopoeic word; compare Latin nonnus (“monk; old person”), Proto-Celtic *nana (“grandmother”), Sanskrit नना (nanā, “mother, mama”), Russian ня́ня (njánja, “nurse”). Within Greek, there are also νέννος (nénnos, “uncle”), νάννας (nánnas, “uncle”) and νίννη (nínnē, “grandmother”).
