μορμύρος
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- μόρμυλος (mórmulos)
Etymology
[edit]According to Strömberg, from μορμύρω (mormúrō, “to roar and boil”), if the fish meant here would properly be the "bubble-blower". The connection with μύρω (múrō, “to flow, trickle”) is not convincing. Beekes does not dismiss a Pre-Greek origin.
