[edit]Traditionally derived from λέπας (lépas, “scaur, rock”) + -ᾰ́ς (-ás), as the animal clings to the rock. Alternatively, it could derive from λέπος (lépos, “rind, husk”), λεπίς (lepís, “scale, flake”).
