λαυκανίη

[edit]- λευκανίη (leukaníē)
Etymology
[edit]Formation like ἀρτηρία (artēría), from an unattested *λαυκάνη (*laukánē). An aspirated by-form appears in λαυχάνη (laukhánē, “tongue; language”). Since there are no certain correspondences (Lithuanian liaukà (“gland”) has been proposed, but does not convince), and as there is a variant with -χ-, Pre-Greek origin is almost certain. The form in λευκ- may be folk-etymological after λευκός (leukós, “white”), but may also be due to substrate origin.
