Etymology

According to Beekes, from Pre-Greek, in view of the suffix -αρ, which can be seen also in ἴκταρ (íktar), σκίναρ (skínar) and σῦφαρ (sûphar). Alternatively, it may be related to κῦδος (kûdos, honour), or Arabic قَبْر (qabr, grave).
