[edit]Per Derksen, from Proto-Indo-European *k(ʷ)end- or *k(ʷ)enHd(ʰ)-. Compare Sanskrit खादति (khādati, “to chew, to bite”) and Persian خاییدن (xâyidan, “to chew”). See also κνώδαλον (knṓdalon, “wild beast”).
