Per Derksen, from Proto-Indo-European *k(ʷ)end- or *k(ʷ)enHd(ʰ)-. Compare Sanskrit खादति (khādati, to chew, to bite) and Persian خاییدن (xâyidan, to chew). See also κνώδαλον (knṓdalon, wild beast).
