From κερᾱτών (kerātṓn, made of horns) +‎ -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā), from κέρᾰς (kéras, horn), potentially referring to the horn shape of the carob fruit. Compare κερωνῐ́ᾱ (kerōníā), κερᾱτέᾱ (kerātéā).
