[edit]From κερᾱτών (kerātṓn, “made of horns”) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-ĭ́ā), from κέρᾰς (kérăs, “horn”), potentially referring to the horn shape of the carob fruit. Compare κερωνῐ́ᾱ (kerōnĭ́ā), κερᾱτέᾱ (kerātéā).
