[edit]Etymology
[edit]The entry by Beekes in his Etymological Dictionary of Greek reads (in paraphrase):
"The etymology is unknown. Schrader connected it with καρπός (karpós, “root of the hand”) as "handy", with further connection to Proto-West Germanic *hwerban (“to turn”). Others recognize the base form in κάλπη (kálpē, “trot”). A first syllable καρπ- can hardly be Indo-European. Beekes does not dismiss a Pre-Greek origin."
